In years past the Lee Richardson Zoo was possibly the largest in the state and still draws visitors from a large surrounding area. That zoo was named after Lee Richardson just prior to his retirement. It is noteworthy that Chief Lee Richardson, while serving as Chief of Police, developed a zoo for our community. An example of that involvement is the identification of Jake Fleagle after a bank robbery in Lamar, Colorado, and the kidnapping and murder of Dr. Because of that role, the Garden City Police Department became involved with other departments criminal activity. These two law enforcement officers would become a powerful and well known police force in this area.Ĭhief Richardson developed Garden City as an identification center for law enforcement. Richardson was elected Sheriff of Finney County and served in that position for four years. Richardson was appointed city marshal on April 30, 1918, and was paid $75.00 per month for his efforts. Finally on October 2, 1917, Lee Richardson was appointed as a night policeman. ![]() The city had a number of city marshals and "policemen" that did not build much tenure in the position. Earp was a colorful person who served as a law enforcement officer from time to time as well as maintaining his private business. Earp served as marshal until he resigned his position on August 6, 1883. Earp was an older half brother of the famous Wyatt Earp. Earp was appointed the first city marshal of Garden City. City governmental offices were promptly filled with local townspeople. On January 13, 1883, the village of Garden City was incorporated as a city of the third class. You might want to before I it all!”.“I’ve been really into podcasts lately.“What’s the best book you’ve read recently?”.This will stretch and strengthen your conversation skills. What not to do: Don’t stick to the same group of work friends you hang out with at the office. Also, your conversations do not have to be about work! What to do: Social events are more relaxed, so being more playful or humorous is perfectly fine. Do you have any recommendations for what I should see?” “If you didn’t have the job you have now, what would you be doing instead?”.“What did you think about ?” Only ask this if you know they attended it, of course!.“What do you think is the biggest misconception about ?”.“If you were in charge of this event next year, what would you change?”.“What’s your biggest takeaway from this conference?”.“Which workshop are you most excited about?”.“What’s been your favorite talk so far?”.“If you were to give a talk at this conference, what would it be about?”.What not to do: Unless you know the person well, you may want to avoid cracking jokes or trespassing into taboo territory (I’m thinking of the time a guy at a work conference asked me how much my company was paying me). The great thing about conferences, workshops, and industry events is that they give you loads of topics to talk about. What to do: Because networking is focused on making connections to further your career, keep it professional and focus on the topic of the event at hand. In real life, nearly every conversation you have with someone new is going to begin with introducing yourself and perhaps exchanging a few pleasantries before you dive into deep questions-and that’s fine! At networking events, for example, it’s crucial to know a person’s job role if you want to talk about future work collaborations. We’ve all used (and heard) this go-to conversation starter plenty of times, and in professional settings, it’s impossible to avoid. Did that question make you cringe? The Thing has spawned a variety of merchandise – including a 1982 novelization, haunted house attractions, board games – and sequels in comic books, a video game of the same name, and a 2011 prequel film of the same name. Filmmakers have noted its influence on their work, and it has been referred to in other media such as television and video games. In the subsequent years, it has been reappraised as one of the best science fiction and horror films ever made and has gained a cult following. The film found an audience when released on home video and television. the Extra-Terrestrial, which offered an optimistic take on alien visitation a summer that had been filled with successful science fiction and fantasy films and an audience living through a recession, diametrically opposed to The Thing 's nihilistic and bleak tone. Many reasons have been cited for its failure to impress audiences: competition from films such as E.T. The film grossed $19.6 million during its theatrical run. Critics both praised the special effects achievements and criticized their visual repulsiveness, while others found the characterization poorly realized. The Thing was released in 1982 to negative reviews that described it as "instant junk" and "a wretched excess". Of the film's $15 million budget, $1.5 million was spent on Rob Bottin's creature effects, a mixture of chemicals, food products, rubber, and mechanical parts turned by his large team into an alien capable of taking on any form. Filming lasted roughly twelve weeks, beginning in August 1981, and took place on refrigerated sets in Los Angeles as well as in Juneau, Alaska, and Stewart, British Columbia. The Thing went through several directors and writers, each with different ideas on how to approach the story. The thing that kind of bothers me is that so many people view this kind of orchestral music as inaccessible, like you have to have some sort of specialized knowledge or tuned ear in order to really appreciate it. ![]() The art is in the intricate everyday that can be heard in the nuances of a symphonic song. It’s the kind of music you can go to when you’re needing to feel that sort of moment. That’s why I want to try and create music that can become part of that everyday for people. I wish that if I could have a super power, I would have someone that was just scoring my life all the time, just to give me that extra bump. Right this idea of soundtracking brings in so many more aspects of what the emotion at hand could be and what the story being told is. Yeah? I love storytelling and I love the way that the orchestra can sort of help tell the story of the song and paint what’s going on in the lyrics in a way that brings the whole thing to life for the listener. I love that you used the word cinematic because when I listen to your work, original songs and covers, they feel almost tangible and three dimensional. So instead of just listening to a great song, all of a sudden you’re visualizing an amazing thing in addition to watching or listening to the song. I can think of movies that changed my life, that type of thing, and when you take a piece of it’s sort of orchestral quality, that cinematic quality, and you put it into a song in the right way, it can kind of activate the same sort of neurons that fire when you’re watching a great movie. I think the reason it works is because of movies and because the orchestra is such an established part of movies, so it holds such a great place in people’s journeys. Obviously I’m biased because it’s like my heart language, you know? And I don’t think it would work for every song 100% agree like that comment, but I think for me, I can put it on any song. If you had to trust anyone (other than us), the Recording Academy might be one of the places to look, because they’re stingy when it comes to who they recommend, recognize, and regard as being a success worthy of national accolades.Īccording to them, us, and the world at large, Cody Fry is a Grammy-nominated musician, a first-class composer, and a cool, calm, and collected man to have a phone conversation with.Ībout two months ago someone commented on one of your TikTok videos: “Cody Fry has single handedly convinced me that all music needs to be accompanied by a 60 piece orchestra.” You agreed, naturally, but what really about orchestration elements do you think elevates a track? This is data, though, and art is subjective. Then there’s the speed in which his songs rack up streams and monthly listeners, of course. But you can’t just take our word for it! The hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of likes can be trusted, surely. It was through a personal love of mainstream pop hits and his professional, formal training that has allowed his artistry to resonate with the most modern and generation spanning audience there is in the streaming era: the Internet.Īs he combines orchestral takes on songs with silly dancing videos and immersive vlogging with follower interaction, Cody Fry is quickly becoming more than the musical underdog of the 2020s. He has always been a little bit more creative and a tad more open-minded about what classical music could be. The success he is having currently may be taking off in new ways because of a video sharing app on his smartphone, but the upward trajectory of his craft has been there since the start. The intricacies of mixing and mastering, producing and arranging, singing and songwriting, make up who Cody Fry is. There is something about the ebb and flow of harmony, melody, instrumentation, orchestration, and storytelling that causes his soul to light up in the most marvelous sense. Someone who grew up around music and appreciated fine art for as long as they could remember, Cody Fry has truly always been a musician. While this is all, in fact, true, it’s only three parts of the “whirlwind” series of events that has led one young composer to musical stardom… and online notoriety. Cody Fry went viral on TikTok, got nominated for a Grammy, and, as of today, released an album. |
